Was sort of surprised by the cost, which at over 38k, i s not a cheap car.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , after my experience with one in Europe. Unfortunately , that is not sold here so I can’t figure out if it was a holiday romance or if I actually like the car. However, Mercedes decided to start selling the A-class this year. That means I could get one of those. If they had a manual in this, I would probably actually get one. The lack of one is off-putting for me, but I’m starting to come to terms that my next car is probably going to be an automatic. I really do want to drive one of these to see how I like it, but for now the 3 isn’t going anywhere.

Seems like there are a bunch of cars about this size with better performance for any 10k less, or am I missing something?

Wow, it has 24 more HP than a new Corolla.

I don’t think you’re missing anything; they’re expensive for what they are. I would probably look at something like a GTI before getting an A-class. Unless they offer it with a manual. Real reason I didn’t really consider a Benz when I was getting my E92 was the lack of a stick.

Things a Corolla does not come with:
Which is why they can charge what they do for it.

What? nooooo Nonononnoo... Surely the A/CLA and FWD 1-series exist solely because you’re getting the best value for your dollar... !

And it’s not even the A250 version, just the downgraded A220. Are CLA prices out already? At least that gets more power and looks better.

Just a little more at 33.1k

The base C Class used to be a compact luxury sedan for the price of a optioned out regular full- size sedan (Accord, Camry, Maxima/Altima).
Now, the regular full- size sedans come with more features and are nearly equal in terms of luxury. They only case for them is if you’re a car enthusiast who really wants something RWD.
I mean, are these newer luxury sedans significantly more luxurious, or do regular people just buy them for the badge?

Should be been more specific-New CLA. It’s bound to get a price increase above the current CLA to slot it above the A. But remains to be seen if it is worth the premium based on price with options.

I’d take a Golf R over both either way.

Yeah, I would definitely get a GTI or FOST over this, personally. Or a Mazda 3 or...

I think a lot of people will buy these for the badge alone. That said, I still think there is merit in buying something like a C class even if you’re not a car enthusiast. I test drove a 2016 when I was looking back in 2017 and it was very nice to drive. I think I would even say it’s better than an F30.

There are better buys for the money, for sure. If I was going to get a Benz, probably get a slightly used C-Class.

I didn’t see the price for the new one on their website, I wasn’t too sure if they’d updated it or not. There will probably be a price increase, but I would assume it’s not too much, maybe a grand or two at the most.
On the Golf R, I really liked the A3 i had in the UK. So yeah, I’d look at a Golf R, if I was really wanting to spend that kind of money.

I find their window shape to be quite hideous, like someone set it on a fulcrum and then put two heavy weights on either end and bent the front and rear downward. Just not appealing to my particular taste.

I think it’s always kind of weird that brand premium is usually only a point of criticism for lower-priced cars. Everyone makes fun of people who would buy this or a CLA when they could get a Camry for less, but that same argument is rarely applied to an AMG GT and a Corvette.
I mean, sure, as the CLA has shown, there are a lot of stupid people willing to be upside on a loan for a Benz that’s not much better than something they can actually afford, but that’s not the only market for these.
At the end of the day, it can be optioned out for the price of a base C-Class. If you want an appliance with a reasonable amount of comfort and safety, and, yeah, brand prestige, I don’t see why not. Not everyone wants to be driving to work in a Toyota at 50, but not everyone wants to pay more than a marginal amount of their income on a car.

The C43 seems like a sweet spot, imho.

Hmm....I can see that.
Mercedes tends to make cars that are more luxury oriented. BMW is more sports-luxury. I wonder how the C Class compares to the Accord or Camry.

I don’t totally understand how these all slot together - looks to me like the B is basically a ‘tall wagon’ A? Both on the global small FWD platform?

I’d probably get a used low mileage E class at Carmax, with a warranty for 30-35k.

The previous generation ( through 2016) has a very good reliability record and can be found in the 20s, too. Either is a better choice than this imho.

The B-Class is a s mall MPV , which I hear is a segment nonexistent in America. B asically the European equivalent of a minivan, they’re targeted at families, the C-Max is another. T he smaller ones are basically tall hatchbacks, going up in size to essentially a slightly smaller minivan, though s liding doors are uncommon.

thanks much - we got the C-max in hybrid version only over here in the states for a while, (good looking little rig actually,) and the Mazda5 but I believe both have been pulled... Everybody wants CUVs over here now...

If it makes you feel any better, MPVs are going extinct due to crossover sales over here . The Opel/ Vauxhall Zafira is the best selling MPV in Europe, and it’s now dead, replaced by a generic crossover.
OK that probably doesn’t make anyone feel any better.
